Ebook About
The chilling tome that launched an entire genre of books about the often gruesome but always tragic ways people have died in our national parks, this updated edition of the classic includes calamities in Yellowstone from the past sixteen years, including the infamous grizzly bear attacks in the summer of 2011 as well as a fatal hot springs accident in 2000. In these accounts, written with sensitivity as cautionary tales about what to do and what not to do in one of our wildest national parks, Whittlesey recounts deaths ranging from tragedy to folly—from being caught in a freak avalanche to the goring of a photographer who just got a little too close to a bison. Armchair travelers and park visitors alike will be fascinated by this important book detailing the dangers awaiting in our first national park.

Book Death in Yellowstone: Accidents and Foolhardiness in the First National Park Review :

I vacationed in Yellowstone in 2013 and saw the original of this book in one of the visitor center gift shops. Sounds a bit macabre, but the book still grabbed my attention. I highly appreciated Whittlesey's use of newspaper accounts to tell many of the stories. It is depressing to know there are some people who will probably never be found who were last seen in the park. The stories about Yellowstone Lake were the toughest on me knowing how the water can act during storms, let alone the massive size and depth of the lake. Yellowstone is one of the most fascinating places in the world but the place still shows how people can make poor decisions or have good intentions go bad. People will be people, no matter where they are. I also respected how Whittlesey defended the park as there have been suggestions to increase safety to those who visit the park. When I was there, I thought the warning signs were obvious, easy to understand and plenty of them. Having even more warning signs or safety measures would easily ruin the park's wilderness atmosphere. This is a good historical account.
It takes talent to take a subject that should be incredibly juicy, compelling, and sobering, and turn it into a plodding, dry, repetitive slog through history. Sadly, that is what we are left with in "Death in Yellowstone"Anyone who has been to Yellowstone can understand the attraction of the thermal features, so the first chapter--about deaths caused by geysers or falls into thermal pools--should be riveting. Instead, we read again and again that so-and-so, age such-and-such, from [fill in name of a town and a state], fell into a pool...and died. This is not narrative; it's a dry collection of facts, made even drier because the author will present the same information twice. First, we get to read the author's attempt to summarize the story, and then the author writes "A newspaper article/eyewitness account/letter described the event"...and then we get to read the entire description that was just summarized. A good editor would've cut one or the other. The entire book is full of sloppy, repetitive, trite writing. The description of every suicide ends with the sentence "Nothing more is known". Warnings of the dangers we should avoid are repeated so often in such heavy-handed fashion that I started to shut them out. The classic writer's dictum to show, not tell, has been sadly ignored. The author declares that deaths by automobile accident are so common as to be uninteresting (or maybe that there were too many to list). Interestingly (the author starts a LOT of sentences with "Interestingly", by the way), I learned from a Yellow Car driver in the park that when a car crashes into a bison, the car is a total loss not because of body/engine damage, but because the bison evacuates its bowels due to the trauma and/or its death--and there is just no way to adequately clean a car interior once it's been covered in bison poop. I can promise you that this little bit of information is far more interesting and amusing than just about anything you'll read in "Death in Yellowstone".
